Max Thomson's new exhibition ‘Domain Paintings,’ takes us on an aesthetic stroll through deep, murky blues and greens of exotic conifers that contrast with neat walkways in soft pink and violet tones; and the clipped grass in summery greens. Although these scenes are from contemporary Auckland, New Zealand, one would not be able to tell were it not for the titles. Reminiscent of genteel Sunday promenades through manicured gardens, where nature conforms to the architectural hand of human design, these scenes are nothing like the typical New Zealand landscape. They appear as if they are ghosts of our colonial period where English settlers sought to bring their home with them; sculpting New Zealand into a second England.
