The Return Of Rhodes
This week we welcome Beverly Rhodes back to Black Asterisk with her new show ‘Holding On and Letting Go’. The opening kicks off at 6:30pm November 13, coinciding with the opening of the annual event Art in the Dark, held just across the road at Western Park.
In this body of work Beverly explores the idea of risky play and emotional expression in children. Keeping with her refined aesthetic, ‘Holding On and Letting Go’ shows a continuation of themes seen in Beverly’s previous work - you may remember her dreamlike series that explored issues of childhood, ‘Playland'. With her subtle use of colour and precariously balanced figures, the paintings ring with the anxiety of the viewer and the exhilaration of the child at play. Swing 5 is shown above. The young remain intriguing, and a sense of isolation and fragmented emotions are present throughout the collection. ‘Holding On and Letting Go’ will be showing until December 2.
